Compose's Write Stuff and the first winner of 2017

Published

It's time to announce the winner of the $1000 Compose Write Stuff bonus.

Write Stuff is our ongoing project to find new writers who can write about databases with authentic skill, knowledge, and experience. We have been running it for a while now in regular cycles of around three months; at the end of each cycle we pick a writer who's done well enough to deserve a bonus.

When we set about extending the cycle of Write Stuff over the holidays and raising the bonus, we didn't expect such a great response from our readers and the aspiring writers within that group. With articles digging into PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, and Elasticsearch, it was going to be close and there were early leaders in our tally of viewers of the articles. When we opened the vote to readers and a flood of votes, we saw one article head rapidly to the front of the pack and stay there.

Now the votes have been counted and tallied and we are pleased to announce that the $1000 Write Stuff grand prize goes to

Gigi Sayfan for Designing the UFC Moneyball.

He wrote a fantastic article that used Cassandra/ScyllaDB, MySQL, and Redis to design his own UFC "Moneyball" to keep track of real-time UFC statistics. His article goes into detail about the dynamics of collecting, storing, and analyzing data using the three databases together when developing a real-time data and analytics platform.

When we let Gigi know, we also asked what he likes about Write Stuff and he said:

You're doing a great job getting high-caliber and interesting writers. I learn something new from every article I read. You have accumulated some serious high-quality content. The process is very lightweight and author-friendly from proposal all the way through payment. I write for several other technical sites and Compose is one of the best. Keep it up.

Everyone at Compose congratulates him on his success and for contributing a noteworthy and interesting article. Also, we'd like to thank and congratulate all of our Write Stuff authors on their contributions for this cycle because they were nonetheless outstanding.

Your turn?

Do you have something you want to say about databases? Is there a technique you want to share with the world? Have you harnessed the power of multiple databases? Or tamed a wild table? You could well be the kind of person we're looking for, someone with the Write Stuff.

If you would like to take part in Compose's Write Stuff, you'll find more details on the program page. The seventh cycle started on February 1st and will run until the end of April. There's $200 of cash and $200 of database credit available to successful writers and this cycle, the more regular $500 bonus.

If it's your first time writing and you have a subject or topic you know well, write about that. If you are new to writing but have an idea, we can help you make sure that it's headed in the right direction for our audience. We're here to help and we look forward to your ideas landing in our mail soon.
