In this Noteworthy on Compose, we're counting down to the End of Life for MongoDB 3.4, and retiring MongoDB 3.2. But, Compose has your back. We'll give you the information you'll need to easily upgrade your databases all with a click of a button.
End of provisioning MongoDB 3.2.x
If you have a Compose for MongoDB database running version 3.2.x, we're officially retiring it on Compose. That means current Compose for MongoDB users on version 3.2.x will still be able to use your databases, but you will no longer be able to provision new MongoDB 3.2.x databases.
By the end of December 2019, all Compose for MongoDB users are expected to be either on MongoDB version 3.4.x, or the current, preferred version of 3.6.
To upgrade your Compose for MongoDB version 3.2.x database to 3.4.x, you'll be able to do an in-place upgrade within the Compose console. Once you're in your database's Overview panel, you'll see the green button indicating that there is a new version available.
Clicking that button will take you to another panel where you will be able to select MongoDB version 3.4 on Compose. The click the Change Version button to start the upgrade.
You'll be taken to the Jobs window where you'll see the status of the upgrade taking place in real-time. It may take a while for it to finish upgrading.
But, if you just want to jump to the latest version, read on ...
MongoDB 3.4's End of Life coming
Coming in January of 2020, MongoDB 3.4.x will reach its End of Life. At that time, we'll be sending out reminders to users to start the migration process to MongoDB version 3.6.x on Compose.
So, if you want to upgrade before that takes place, you can with the click of a button. Just like upgrading from 3.2.x to 3.4.x, you can upgrade from 3.4.x to 3.6.x as an in-place upgrade.
From your Compose console, you'll see the green New Version Available button.
Clicking that button will take you to the Settings window where you'll be able to select the preferred version of MongoDB.
Click on Change Version to start the upgrade process and you will have the latest version of MongoDB on Compose and also ahead of the game.
Upgrading from MongoDB 3.2 to 3.6
Unfortunately, you can't upgrade your MongoDB 3.2.x directly to 3.6.x. You will first have to upgrade to 3.4.x then to 3.6.x. However, before making the upgrade, you should test your application to make sure that it will work using the latest drivers for MongoDB in your preferred language.
And that's it for Noteworthy on Compose ...
